Cool Factoids About Us

  • We're a Vermont company: we care about the community and the environment. We supply two local soup kitchens with all of our seconds, and we recycle just about everything in our facility possible. (Anyone have any ideas what to do with thousands of pounds of egg shells??? Way too much to compost!)

  • We’re an eclectic group of foodies. Often we have a “question of the day” posed by one of our more creative folks. Sample question: “What person in history would you like to be?” Cleopatra, Frederic Chopin, Frederick Remington, and Katharine Hepburn were some of the answers. Here’s another recent question: “Dinner party! Invite five guests, living or dead. Don’t worry, you’re not responsible for the food, and no one is spending the night.” Still another question: “Aliens visit the planet and offer to take you and one companion on a tour of the galaxy. You’ll be gone for 101 years, and when you return, you will be as you are now. Would you go, and whom would you take?” Makes us think, and it’s fun to hear our very different answers. We’d like to think our creativity spills over into our breads.

  • We’re spreading peace, one shell at a time. With every production run of pizza shells, we craft a few shells with a peace symbol etched into thePeace Pizza dough. It looks pretty much like the one shown to the right. If you come across one of them, take a picture of it (before you load it with sauce and cheese, of course), send it to us, and we’ll send you an Against The Grain magnetic peace symbol. You can stick it on your car, or your fridge, or maybe Air Force One (if that’s your vehicle of choice).

  • We make the highest quality gluten-free bread products available—if ours aren't the best, we won’t sell them.

  • We obtain our ingredients from local growers and producers when available. For example, our milk, cheese, and eggs--which are among our most important ingredients--come from local sources. Much of  our non-food purchases also come from local suppliers, such as our packaging, boxes, design work, and printing. We try to support our local economy in every way possible.

  • Our building was once a printing press. One of the Harry Potter books was printed there. Maybe that explains the magic.

  • Our models for AGAINST THE GRAIN GOURMET™ are Vermont-based companies that make ice cream, coffee, beer, and snowboards. How cool is that?
